Among all the various figures in 19th century America who left controversial legacies, it is hard to find one as influential as Joseph Smith (1805-1844), the founder of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Mormonism, and the Latter-Day Saint movement. Revered as a prophet on the level of Moses by some, reviled as a perpetrator of large-scale fraud by others, what everyone can agree on is that Joseph Smith founded a religious movement that played a crucial role in the settlement of the West, especially in Utah.

Locating Joseph Smith in history is to look for the "mess" of early America and find him standing in the middle, trying to make sense of the "native pandemonium" that gripped the nation in its formative years. All the things that Mormons recoil at - the mention of his treasure seeking days of youth, the use of the seer stones and looking into the hat to read "reformed Egyptian" - help explain the youthful creativeness of a young United States trying to organize itself. There is a humor in his story, and especially those first years of creating the church that speak directly anyone who has felt the exhilaration of creativity. Inspired by the Second Great Awakening and evidence of Native American cultures that surrounded him during his early years in western New York, Smith claimed that he had visions as a young adult that helped him produce the Book of Mormon, and he was able to create a society of like-minded followers who intended to strike west and found Zion.

I found the book The Mormon Wars: The History of the Mormons' Conflicts across the Frontier in the 19th Century to be enlightening. I knew that the Mormons had conflicts with non-Mormons in Missouri and Illinois but I thought it was mainly related to religious issues. I did not realize that Mormons of that era wish to completely control the governments they lived under. I also did not realize that Brigham Young wanted to create a Mormon theocratic based country in the area that became the state of Utah. Anyone reading this book will develop some understanding of the how's and why's conflicts between Mormons and non-Mormons in the 19th century.

Ever hear of MOUNTAIN MEADOWS MASSACRE? There are at least eight books on the subject available via kindle. How about UNDER THE BANNER OF HEAVEN by Jon Krakauer? Read these after reading THE MORMON WARS. The next time someone knocks at your door preaching their religion.....you can enlighten them.
Interesting reading and compilation of the Mormon struggles. It is more of a narrative than an analysis.
I learned a lot from this book. It is very thought provoking. Mormanism had a bigger impact on that time than I realized.
This book is both entertaining and informative as it explains how the Mormons survived religious strife and violent conflicts to eventually establish a society in the West (primarily Utah), and how Brigham Young stood up to the federal government during the Civil War era.
This is not history. In the first few pages they did not even get the right birth date of Joseph Smith, claiming he was born in 1817 (real date 1805). From that point it goes down hill with nothing but lies and shades of truth. This is not history, it only claims to be history. In reality, it's an anti-Mormon book that is not worth the time.
