What was once a simple adventure is now a test of survival… Four college students set out to spend a holiday weekend hiking a section of the Appalachian Trail. Unfortunately, a fun filled trek turns to terror when a stranger brutally attacks them. Trying to escape the grips of death, the group is forced to veer from the main trail. Relationships are tested, lives are on the line, and one of their own is dead. However, even in the mix of all this chaos, an unexpected love manages to bloom. Nothing is as it seems and all is worse than could ever be imagined.

Trail of Deceit Dr John House 9781680580389 Books

There's a train wreck on the horizon. Can you look away? John House masterfully spins us into a world where horrible events are sure to unfold. After the first "event" the reader is left to wonder just how horrific this train wreck is going to be. I even wondered if I wanted to read about it because the nightmares of horror movies past all have the opportunities to rise from the ashes in this setting. But fortunately House pulls back a bit on the terror -- just enough to keep the reader from saying, "Too much," and leading us to go ahead and turn that next page even though "too much" is still out there. Does it arrive? How much is too much?

Four college "friends" take a hike on the Appalachian Trail. The weather is unpredictable. One student is a coddled homebody who has no business being on such a trip, but peer pressure always wins out. Besides with three other people, what could go wrong? In the middle of nowhere with help unavailable, we have the classic setting of "kids-in-the-horror-movie-with-a-killer-stalking-them."

I recommend "Trail of Deceit," if only to learn the original story as it was written because Hollywood is sure to beat a path to the authors door for this one.

A highly suspenseful novel. Dr. John House has written a novel placed on and around the Appalachian Trail in northern Georgia, eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina that will keep you up late at night reading it. I highly recommend it.
Very few books captivate me to the point to where I hate to put them down, but "Trail of Deceit" has done just that. I read a lot and this is one of the best books I've read in years. We have hiked a lot on the AT and are very familiar with the area where this story is set. Dr. House has the gift of writing in a way that allows me to practically see, feel and even smell each scene as the story unfolds. I hope he will continue to write as I can't wait to read more of his works

Great action-packed intense thriller! What a scary concept. Great characters and great plot. Lots of twists and turns. Just could not put it down!
Read John House's book, the "Trail of Deceit?" He is an excellent writer, hard to put the book down, He has such a vivid imagination and makes his story come alive, like you are seeing it personally. I kept wondering what was going to happen to those poor hikers next. After reading the book you may not want to hike the Appalachian trail, or at least the wilderness part. Very entertaining book.
After the first few pages of this book I thought this is not for me, several pages on I thought there is no way this book can hold my interest for another 400 or so pages if it is all about walking a trail.
I was wrong on both counts, becoming completely absorbed in the book until the last page. Well written and edited, I would go as far as to say one of my best reads of the year.
This author has the ability to write using just the right number of words, never embellishing or lacking the correct word to describe situations. Highly recommended.
The first 75% of this book was really strong, easily a 4-5 star book. There's a lot going on, 10% in and there had already been sexual assault and murder. Four inexperienced hikers with a "mountain-man" stalker on their trail made for some suspenseful reading. The details of the hikers dealing with injuries, dehydration, hunger (and lack of cell phones, which was incredibly stupid) were riveting to me. Almost every choice they made seemed reasonable at the time, but didn't always work out positively.

The reason I'm only giving this three stars is that I felt let down by the last 25% of the book. Here's why

1) It dragged on just a bit too long, it lost the desperation.

2) The "God will take care of everything" comments. I rolled my eyes every time.

3) The farcical "romance". Sure he's a serial murderer and rapist, but he's not a bad guy! Ugh.

4) The end. Way too abrupt (and more of the "God took care of everything" crap). Could have left out some of the filler in the last 25% to expand on the "after" part.
If you like novels that you can't put down, novels that keep you guessing until the last page, then you won't want to miss "Trail of Deceit" by Dr. John C. House.

Two couples set out on a hiking trip along the Appalachian Trail. Diane and her boyfriend Bill have some hiking experience; Linda and Jerry, not so much. They agree to leave their cell phones behind. To add to the mix, one of the four has a hidden agenda that will greatly impact the lives of the other three.

For a short time, they enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Appalachian Trail that has overwhelmed thousands of nature lovers over the years, but everything is about to change. The four turn out to be unprepared for the danger that befalls them as a stalker in the form of an experienced woodsman enters the scene bringing first fear, then terror and eventually death onto the scene.

House demonstrates his brilliant story telling technique throughout the pages of "Trail of Deceit". He knows the challenges ot the AT and he shares these with his readers. His survival scenes are awe inspiring.

Latch on to this enthralling novel in either paperback or as an ebook. Get your copy from and add your review to the growing list.
